The Pentagon's inspector general has released its first comprehensive accounting of the physical and financial toll from the ongoing conflict between the United States and Iran, documenting extensive damage to American military and diplomatic facilities across the Middle East. The report covers the period from April 1 through June 30, 2026.

As of late July 2026, the total cost of the conflict had reached $37.5 billion, according to the inspector general's findings.

Iranian retaliatory strikes destroyed hundreds of buildings along with dozens of aircraft and drones at American installations hosted across Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Oman, Jordan and Israel. Damage to U.S. diplomatic facilities alone came to $184 million, spread across Iraq, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and the UAE.

The State Department's own costs tied to the conflict totaled $113 million, including $80 million for contingency operations. Separately, evacuating roughly 9,000 American citizens from the region cost the government more than $11 million.

The Pentagon also recorded more than $44 billion in emergency and non emergency arms sales to regional allies during the reporting period. Officials estimate it will take roughly three years to restore the military's stock of advanced munitions to prewar levels, a timeline that points to gaps in domestic missile production capacity exposed by the conflict.
