A new analysis from the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget argues that the affordability crisis squeezing American households is closely tied to the size of the federal deficit, and that bringing the deficit down could meaningfully raise household incomes over time.

The group's modeling, which draws on data from the Congressional Budget Office, estimates that keeping the national debt stable rather than letting it climb could add roughly $14,250 a year in household income per family over the next 30 years, adding up to about $36,000 compared with a scenario where debt keeps rising rapidly. The analysis also points to more immediate effects: a 1.5 percentage point reduction in interest rates tied to lower deficits could save a household with a $500,000 mortgage about $5,800 a year.

The report lands as inflation sits at 3.4%, still above the Federal Reserve's 2% target, and as the national debt has climbed to $40 trillion. The Treasury is now spending roughly $3 billion a day on interest payments alone. The report frames deficit reduction as a way to cool inflation and interest rates by easing excess demand in the economy and reducing the degree to which government borrowing crowds out private investment.

The U.S. debt to GDP ratio now stands at around 123%, still well below Japan's roughly 207%, though the comparison has done little to calm concerns among economists watching the pace of America's borrowing.

The findings arrive as affordability has become a central political issue heading into the midterms. Recent polling cited in the report found that 29% of voters rank rising prices as a top concern, while another 15% point to affordability more broadly, pressure that has landed squarely on President Trump as his administration navigates the issue. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has pointed to the administration's broader growth strategy as the path to easing the burden on households, even as debate continues over how directly deficit reduction itself would translate into relief at the kitchen table.
