Taiwan opened its 14th U.S. economic and cultural office in Phoenix on Monday, a move meant to support Taiwanese businesses and citizens in Arizona as the state's semiconductor industry expands. The office opening comes as Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company's investment in Arizona has grown to $265 billion, the largest foreign direct investment in U.S. history, including a $100 billion expansion TSMC pledged earlier. Around 500 Taiwanese engineers are currently working at TSMC's Arizona operations.

Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs attended the opening and voiced support for the new office, while Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego pointed to the city's growing Taiwanese community as a reason for the expanded presence. Jason Hsu, a former Taiwan lawmaker now a fellow at the Hudson Institute, has also weighed in on the significance of the office for the broader economic relationship between Taiwan and Arizona.

China, which claims Taiwan as its own territory, formally objected to the office's opening. China's embassy in the United States and its consulate general in Los Angeles sent letters to Governor Hobbs on July 3 and August 21 opposing what they characterized as official interactions between Taiwan and U.S. state governments.

Arizona officials have moved ahead regardless, framing the office as a practical response to the state's deepening economic ties with Taiwan through the chip industry and the needs of its expanding Taiwanese population.
