Washington's streets briefly became an IndyCar track this weekend, as the capital hosted the Freedom 250 Grand Prix, a first of its kind race organized as part of the lead up to America's 250th anniversary celebrations.

President Trump signed an executive order directing his administration to help bring the race to the city, and appeared at the event alongside first lady Melania Trump, family members and several members of his Cabinet. Ahead of the race, Trump took an honorary lap around the downtown circuit in his motorcade, a preview moment that drew heavy attention on social media in the days leading up to the event.

Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser, who worked with the administration on staging the race, said she was pleased to see the city host the event. Streets near the National Mall were converted into a temporary racing circuit for the weekend, drawing large crowds downtown for what organizers billed as a showcase of American engineering and speed timed to the country's semiquincentennial.

On the track, IndyCar driver Kyle Kirkwood won the Freedom 250 Grand Prix on Sunday, capping a weekend that mixed motorsport with the kind of patriotic pageantry organizers have promised will build toward next year's full 250th anniversary festivities.
