Consumer prices rose 0.6% in September from the month before, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported on October 14, the fastest monthly pace since April. On an annual basis, the Consumer Price Index climbed 3.7%, up from 3.4% in August. Gasoline did most of the work behind the jump, rising 9.1% for the month and accounting for more than half of the overall increase, while gas prices nationally sat 34.2% above where they stood a year earlier. Fuel oil prices rose even faster, up 74.2% year over year.

The acceleration was not limited to energy. Core prices, which strip out food and energy to capture the underlying trend, rose 0.3% in September and 2.6% over the past year, up from 2.4% in August. That suggests the inflation pressure building through the summer is starting to spread into other parts of household budgets rather than staying contained to the pump.

The report lands as the last full CPI reading before the midterm elections, giving both parties fresh numbers to argue over heading into the vote. It also complicates the Federal Reserve's next move. Traders were pricing close to even odds heading into the report on whether the central bank raises its benchmark rate at its meeting later this month rather than waiting until December, and the hotter than expected data is likely to keep that debate close.

The fuel driven spike tracks with a pattern economists have flagged in recent months, in which diesel and gasoline costs, rather than crude oil prices alone, have become the clearer signal of where inflation and bond yields are headed. With the government's own inflation gauge now showing gas prices feeding directly into the broader cost of living, the pressure on the Trump administration to bring fuel costs down carries more weight than it did a few weeks ago.
