Elon Musk donated roughly $474 million to Republican candidates and groups during the 2026 midterm cycle, including about $200 million directed specifically at Texas races, $30 million to the Congressional Leadership Fund, the House Republicans' main super PAC, and another $44 million spread across other Republican groups and federal candidates. Musk ranked third among the cycle's biggest party donors, behind Marc Andreessen and Ben Horowitz's combined $116.4 million and Greg Brockman and Anna Brockman's $50 million.
Despite that spending, Republican nominees Ken Paxton and Gov. Greg Abbott both lost their races in Texas as Democrats swept to control of Congress. Shares of SpaceX and Tesla declined following the Democratic wins. Logan Phillips of Race to the White House called the result the biggest defeat for big money in politics in American history.
Analysts are divided on what it means for Musk's political standing. Alex Keena of Virginia Commonwealth University argued that political money mainly shapes public discourse rather than determines winners, and that Musk still gets to steer a political party by setting which topics it focuses on. Casey Michel, author of United States of Oligarchy, took a harsher view, saying Musk's high profile role leading the Department of Government Efficiency appears to have backfired with voters and that his financial backing is now a very clear liability both to the candidates who take it and to Musk himself.
The results raise questions about whether Musk will spend at a similar scale heading into 2028. He said in May 2025, after leaving DOGE, that he planned to cut back on political giving, saying "I've done enough." Jennifer Heerwig of Stony Brook University said income remains one of the strongest predictors of future political donations, suggesting Musk could still give heavily again despite the setback. Democrats, meanwhile, have signaled plans to investigate Musk's time at DOGE and his companies' roughly $10 billion in government contracts awarded since his May 2025 departure.
